Phra Nakhon Kriri Historical Park (Khao Wang) - Thailand Travel Guide

Phra Nakhon Kriri Historical Park (Khao Wang)

Phra Nakhon Kriri Historical Park (Khao Wang)
Phetchaburi

Phra Nakhon Kriri Historical Park (Khao Wang) is located on Khao Khiri, a 92-meter-high hill. The hill was made popular by King Mongkut (Rama IV) who loved the area so much he constructed a palace where he could stay during his numerous trips to the area. The palace was constructed in 1860 and the hill became know locally as Khao Wang (Palace Hill). Built in a mainly European style with Thai and Chinese influence, the palace dominates the three peaks of the hill. On the east peak sits Wat Phra Khew (which bears a strong resemblance to Wat Phra Si Rattana Maha Satsadaram (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) in the Grand Palace in Bangkok); on the middle peak sits the stupa of Phra That Chom Phet (which contains relics of the Lord Buddha) and on the west peak the residential Grand Palace. The Grand Palace comprises a myriad of temples, rooms and buildings designed to cater for the various royal staff (royal page hall, bodyguard rooms, etc.). The site contains a museum where some of the more precious royal artifacts are kept, examples being bronze sculptures and European, Chinese and Japanese ceramics. The peaks offer excellent views and are well worth a wander. The park is well kept and the exhibits quite fascinating. Expect this visit to take a least half a day – if not more!
Details: Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park opens daily between 08:30 and 16:30 with admission 40 Baht. You can walk to the palaces on top of the hill peaks or get there by cable car – 30 Baht there and back.

How to get there: The park is 36 kilometres north of Cha-am and a few kilometers west of Petchaburi. Songtaews are available from both places and cost in the region of 30 Baht.

Juy Warattaya

Thai actress Warattaya Nilkuha, nickname Juy, is I think one of the most beautiful women I have seen. I didn't know who she was until I saw her in a Thai soap opera called Krasat Trariya in which she played the character named Suphankalaya. She is absolutely gorgeous. So fresh and simply beautiful as well as graceful. She has gained a bit of fame, appearing in a few movies and a number of magazines. She even has her own website, www.warattaya.com. Not a MySpace page like so many celebrities, but her own domain and website. However, it is the typical Thai-designed website, cluttered with stupid animated cartoon flashy things, scrolling windows...the usual garbage design done by Thai webmasters. Almost all the Thai websites I visit are like this, even the ones for large businesses. And there isn't all that much content there either. It looks like a lot when you first see the home page. There's a song it plays on loading, and a shout board, but the links on the left don't work. The only thing of interest are some pics from magazines she has appeared in. She doesn't have a lot of internet exposure so there are not a lot of photos of her out there. Here are a few I collected.

Surin Islands National Marine Park in Phang-Nga - Thailand Travel Guide

Surin Islands National Marine Park in Phang-Nga

Located in the Andaman Sea, 60 kilometres to the west of Phang-Nga and about 100 kilometres to the north of Koh Similan islands, this marine park covers an area of 33,750 acres and is one of Thailand’s best places to visit. In operation since 1981, the park includes some of the kingdom’s best islands and beaches and offers the visitor a very broad and rewarding experience.

Key features of the park include the Surin Islands, a group of five wonderfully tranquil islands. The area is also home to a number of tribes whose have for many generations made their living from the sea. A visit to any of these tribes provides a genuine insight into a traditional lifestyle. Alongside numerous nature trails are also a number of sites of cultural interest, but the area is most renowned for its diving and snorkelling opportunities. The coral in this area is some of the richest in the entire kingdom and there are plenty of opportunities to see marine life such as turtles. The park has Thailand’s first underwater nature trail established to offer an insight into marine ecosystems.

A visit to the Surin Islands National Marine Park requires a significant investment in time, but it is time well spent. It is a true delight.

Details: The best time to visit the park is from December to March. There are several bungalows in the National Park as well as camping facilities. All must be booked in advance. As with all national Parks there is a 200-Baht entrance fee. The National Park headquarters is on Koh Surin Nua where accommodation is available at a modest price.

How to get there: There is ferry to the islands that leaves the dock on highway 4 (6 kilometres north of Kuraburi town between Takua Pa and Kapoe). The ferry takes around 4 hours to get to the islands. Travelling by boat Phang-Nga town takes around 13 hours and is therefore not recommended! There are a number of private agencies in the area where people can hire transportation for larger groups.

Contact: Tel: (076) 491-378 to book accommodation. Information about the weather can be obtained from the park office (076) 419-028-9.

Mae Hong Son - Thailand Travel Guide

This quiet town by the Burmese border makes a great base for nature treks and visits to hill tribes such as the long-necked Padaung people.

Temple Architecture
Although tourism is increasing in Mae Hong Son, the town remains reasonably serene. The townspeople are mostly Shan, and local temple architecture shows their influence: one exquisite example is the picture-perfect Wat Jong Kham, set beside a large pond. Another is Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, which offers charming views from its hilltop location.

Hill Tribes
Various ethnic groups are scattered throughout the province, including Karen, Lisu and Lahu, and guided treks from Mae Hong Son pass through their villages. Some are near the town and easy enough to reach by yourself. Of all the hill tribes, the long-necked women of the Padaung from Myanmar are probably the most photographed: they wear brass coils that make their necks and limbs appear unusually long. Nai Soi, Hawy Sen Thao and Huay Ma Khen Som are well-frequented Padaung villages.

Festivals
In March, the colorful Poi Sang Long festival celebrates the ordination of Shan boys into the monkhood. The elaborately dressed boys are carried around the temple, usually Wat Jong Kham or nearby Wat Jong Klang. Folk dancing and drama are a major part of the Buddhist Jong Para festival in October, and local people release small decorated floats onto ponds and rivers during Loi Krathong in November.

Soft Adventure
A quaint place to visit in Mae Hong Son province is the small, endearing town of Pai. The surrounding area offers trekking, bamboo rafting and elephant riding. After a trek, you could try the services of Pai Traditional Massage, close to the Pai River.

Pai River Mae Hong Son - Thailand Travel Guide

Pai River Mae Hong Son

Pai River
Mae Hong Son

The Pai River originates in the Thanon Thongchai and Daen Lao mountains and is 180 kilometers in length. The river runs through a number of provinces in Mae Hong Son and because of swift flowing waters during Thailand’s rainy season, it has become a destination of choice for white water rafters. Rafting takes place throughout the length of the river, and most tours are half- or full day. As it is the only route into Mae Hong Son’s main wildlife sanctuary, rafting the river offers a pretty unique experience. The full length of the river offers around fifteen sets of rapids passing waterfalls (the Suza Waterfall is of particular interest) and hot springs. Tours can be organized from guesthouses and hotels in and around Mae Hong Son, but they can also be booked in advance through agencies. Typical tours start at Pai River Pier. Some tours stop at Kairang Padawang Kekongdu – a village inhabited by long-neck women on the Thai-Burmese border. Trips to the Thai- Myanmar often leave from Ban Huai Dua or Tambon Pha Bong. Trips are often combined with elephant riding.

Details: The rainy season (mid-May to mid-October) is probably the best time of year to go rafting on the Pai. Trips to the Burmese border are often not possible because of fighting between the Burmese government and Shan armies.

Mae Hong Son Info - Thailand Travel Guide

Mae Hong Son

Known to some as Thailand’s ‘Switzerland’ because of its excellent scenery, Mae Hong Son is a frontier province bordered by Myanmar and almost entirely surrounded by mountains – it was for a long time almost entirely cut off from the rest of the world. The area is famed for mists and fog that lie in its mountains and valleys throughout most of the year (but particularly in winter). It is also home to waterfalls, forests and national parks. The area has a strong connection with elephants and there are many places where elephants are trained for a variety of tasks. Alongside its beauty and nature, another draw for the tourist is the region’s culture. Home to the ‘Long Neck Women’ Karen tribes, visits to tribal villages make up a key tourist activity in the area. The province also has a good range of temples, many in splendid mountainside locations.
